A coffee grower’s daughter, roasting in Salem
Bon Mua Oregon — Bốn Mùa translates to four seasons — was founded by Lan Marberry, who grew up as the oldest daughter of coffee farmers in the highlands of Southwest Vietnam. As a six-year-old, she spent hours under a tarp strung between trees, working alongside her father on a modest family farm that sits roughly one mile above sea level.
After settling in Salem, Marberry joined a trade delegation to Asia — a trip that led to the creation of Bon Mua Oregon, which brings coffee from that same family farm to the Willamette Valley. A Ford Family Foundation grant took her to the University of Oregon; she later earned an MBA at Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management. She has pledged 10 to 15 percent of the company’s profits to nonprofit causes for children and the elderly. On the farm, flowering black pepper vines are grown among the coffee as a natural pest deterrent, in place of harmful chemicals.
